History
Salvatore Di Gregorio was born in Lercara Friddi, Sicily on March 3, 1932, to Francesco and Guiseppa Di Gregorio. The Di Gregorio's had eight children. Due to World War II, work was scarce and the family moved to Liege, Belgium when Sam was 14 years old.
He married Theodora (Dora) on September 15, 1951. In June 1954, Sam and Dora moved to St. Louis with their two small children, Guiseppa and Francesco.
In June of 1971, Sam seized an opportunity and started a small corner grocery store on "The Hill". He worked long, hard hours with his family, now including Antoinette and Giovanni, by his side.
The Di Gregorio family is known for their Italian Salsiccia and patrons came not only from St. Louis, but from other states as well, for the hand picked veal, braciole and spedini meats. Restaurant owners began purchasing the family's product. As the business grew, the family expanded their product line with items such as precooked sauces, meatballs, spedini, and a variety of sausage products.
Today, Di Gregorio’s is owned and operated by Dora and her three surviving children: Frank, Toni, and John. Working together, the 2nd generation has grown and improved the business.
Di Gregorio’s consists of three divisions: Retail, Wholesale, and Manufacturing. The retail store, remodeled and expanded in 2004, is located on the corner of Marconi and Daggett. The USDA inspected manufacturing facility is located on Shaw Avenue. The Wholesale department, which houses our main warehouse and offices, is located on Marconi Avenue.
Di Gregorio’s wholesale now services restaurants in the St. Louis and surrounding areas and several across the country. The retail attracts food lovers and gourmets of all ages. The manufacturing continues to produce a variety of quality Italian specialties.
